Day 177 — Meeting Rotary; First Haircut
26-January-1972 (Mittwoch–Wed.)

TRANSCRIPT

Slept till 12:00. Did it feel good.

Practiced part of the day and then went to my first chamber music rehearsal Strauss “Serenade.” It was a good learning experience because the ensemble would basically play (start) on its own, and the professor in charge would listen and offer criticisms and suggestions. Good playing, also.

** Got my FIRST HAIRCUT in SIX MONTHS. Got it cut to my normal “middle-long” short haircut. Probably, the most traumatic experience that I’ve had since I’ve been here. The reason why …….

** Went to my first ROTARY YOUTH GROUP meeting. Got the notice yesterday. There were about 40 people—hair from my length to longer. I really didn’t have to get it cut this short. Met some students and talked for a while. Interesting.

Then we heard a lecture (2 hrs.) on “Management” with emphasis on socialism, r-evolution (
ohne –r) [without the “r”], the role of business with social problems, etc. Even though it was all in German, I got the basic ideas. The speaker was from Deutschland and was supposed to give ideas as to how to strengthen Austria’s economics.

Good but busy day.

REFLECTIONS

Chamber music. I’m rehearsing for a chamber music piece. They are keeping me busy with playing. I like that.

First Austrian haircut. You remember that long hair from my skiing and student ID pictures? Well, it’s gone. Back to a moderate length for my Rotary meeting.

Meeting other Rotary students. I am finally invited to a Rotary event to meet other Rotary students and hear a business lecture, in German. The point of the lecture being that evolution might be better than revolution. I believe I am surprised at how many students there are. I’m not certain if they all have scholarships, or if they are connected to Rotary through the University perhaps. Regardless, it was good to meet others.
